About Us
Vision
Our vision is a world in which the communities we serve have the capacity to sustainably meet their basic human needs, and that our members have enriched global perspectives through the innovative professional educational opportunities that the EWB-USA program provides.
Mission
EWB-USA supports community-driven development programs worldwide by collaborating with local partners to design and implement sustainable engineering projects, while creating transformative experiences and responsible leaders.
Lehigh Valley Professional Chapter of Engineers Without Borders-USA
Engineers Without Borders is a national organization founded in 2002 with more than 10,000 members across the country. EWB-USA has over 350 projects in 45 developing counties across the world. It has over 350 chapters, both student run at universities and professional chapters. It supports people’s basic needs by offering the engineering expertise to provide basic sanitation, power, clean water and energy.
The Lehigh Valley Professional Chapter is a professional organization composed of engineers and technical experts from the valley and surrounding region. Most of these individuals volunteer their time while maintaining full time employment at area corporations. Skills include all types of engineering as well as biology, chemistry, health sciences, social sciences, languages and communications.
The Lehigh Valley chapter has chosen to partner with the Centennial Secondary School (CSS) in the village of Mattru Jong, Sierra Leone.” This school was ransacked and occupied by rebels during the civil war from 1991 to 2002. Much of the school’s infrastructure, including the distributed water supply, sanitation facilities, and structures, is now incapable of meeting even the most basic needs. Prior to the civil war, CSS was a boarding school serving 600 students. Today, the school serves around 1,200 commuter students, boarding being impossible due to the inadequate facilities.
EWB-LVP is coordinating its efforts in cooperation with the Centennial Old Students Association, Centennial’s alumni association. The objective of the partnership is to leave the school with sustainable solutions that can be carried on without continued influx of external aid to enable the school to return to the high level education it had provided previous to the war.
The Lehigh Valley Professionals Chapter also supports the Third Street Alliance for Women and Children in Easton and mentors student EWB chapters at both Lehigh University and Lafayette College.
Donations are needed to sustain these efforts. With a volunteer organization and minimal overhead, donations go directly to projects that create a lasting benefit. Please consider donating to help the Lehigh Valley EWB build a better world.
Professional engineers, engineering students, and others in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding region who would like to be part of the solution are invited to join our chapter. We need people with a wide variety of technical and non-technical skills.
